BKS Iyengar was a modern yoga master who deserves recognition for his contribution to the development of Iyengar Yoga.
The world of yoga is grateful to BKS Iyengar for his significant contributions to its growth and popularity worldwide. Born in 1918 in India, BKS Iyengar grew up in an environment where yoga practice was relatively uncommon. Despite suffering from illnesses from a young age, he was introduced to the ancient teachings of yoga by his guru, Sri T. Krishnamacharya. Through dedicated study of asanas and a personal approach to practice, he refined his own practice and understanding of yoga
BKS Iyengar not only perfected his own practice but also made remarkable efforts to spread and promote yoga. He taught in Europe, the United States, and Asia, where he gained immense popularity. Additionally, he authored books on yoga that have been translated into numerous languages and have been cherished worldwide.
In India, BKS Iyengar founded the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Pune in 1975, which has become the largest yoga institution in the country and one of the most famous in the world.
The Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute, located in Pune, India, is the largest Iyengar yoga center in the world. It is currently led by Prashant Iyengar, son of BKS Iyengar, and Abhijata, his granddaughter, who also dedicate their lives to the teaching, practice, and promotion of Iyengar yoga. The institute's mission is to promote and safeguard Iyengar yoga by providing quality instruction and supporting yoga research.
The Iyengar Yoga Association (UK) is the official organization representing Iyengar Yoga practitioners and teachers in the United Kingdom. The association was established to promote and uphold the teachings of BKS Iyengar and his family's approach to yoga.
